march 17, 2006

it has been so very long since i've written. there are so many changes so quickly now that i just want to take a moment and document some of the cooler things.

zu is an amazing speaker. i can't remember when it was that she said her first sentence, which as i recall was "momma, i done" in reference to her finishing a snack. if i had to guess, i'd say it was around july of last year, I think she was around 20 months. she has taken off in leaps and bounds.

last night we were watching a video and i had told her that we were going to take a break to go eat dinner and then come back and finish it. she got a big smile on her face and said "mommy, i have a *great idea*... we can eat dinner right here in front of the tv and watch a movie too." needless to say, she's a master of the complex sentence structure.

yesterday when i picked her up from daycare, we were standing outside on the steps and another kid's dad was walking up to get him. she looked at him and smiled and said 'you're a dork!'

oh god. well, these are the best times, and we're right in the middle of it. i guess the self-censorship is in order.

"two" has it's definite challenges as i wonder how much of me and zu's future relationship is going to be about me setting a limit and her defying it or trying to get me to bend. she's so verbal now, and just so bright, it's easy to forget she's only 2 and expect more of her.

i admit it's hard not to let her read another 1 or 3 or 5 more books at night - she loves reading more than anything. and when she wants another song before bed, while how does my ego refuse that?? she's the best audience i've ever had. sometimes she sings my little made-up songs to her dollies, which is about the most amazing thing i've ever heard. nevertheless, our bedtime routine is now about an hour long on average, sometimes longer.

honestly, on some nights it is a stretch. but most of the time, man... there's just nothing better in the world than going through the motions and watching her drift off.

as a side note, it was just 5 days after my last post my friend walker did in fact pass on. he has left an amazing legacy [more info | and still yet more] not the least of which was a collection of entirely inappropriate art in my closet which will have to be shelved in our house until zu is at least 15. he spent many hours with zu as the two of them waned/waxed in diametric opposition. now that she's really into diapers, i wish she could share more time with captain underpants, but i'll just have to show her pictures and be the best weird parent i can be in his memory.
